Development and research of one’s own personal style in jazz, from tradition to be-bop to contemporary jazz, interplay and improvisation, creative use of altered scales, polyrhythmia, chromatic melodic figurations, “outside” development, transcriptions and performances taken from recordings of the masters of the main music styles of jazz.

Professional ensembles with renowned jazz musicians, performing concerts alongside them in Italian Clubs and Festivals.

Study and use of jazz compositional techniques and arrangement for rhythm section and five winds/brasses, aimed at live recording and concert productions.

Development of professional skills on sequencers and virtual instruments.

It is a limited students number course, open to a maximum of 8 students per year, coming from Saint Louis pre-academic courses or selected through audition.

Educational Path Jazz full-immersion study path. The entire process is structured to face jazz from all possible angles: on the instrument, in ensemble, in improvisation groups, in orchestra, in the courses of arrangement and composition, while practicing in the recording room, in music production. The best works of the students are published by the Jazz Collection label and promoted in live concerts by Saint Louis Management.

  • One-on-one jazz double bass class with a teacher of the student’s choice.
  • Professional Jazz Ensemble with fortnightly attendance, with renowned artists leading the band, from the trio to the octet.
  • Three-year study of improvisation with jazz musicians such as Ramberto Ciammarughi, Rosario Giuliani, Alessandro Gwis, Dario Deidda.
  • Advanced study of jazz contemporary harmony and modal harmony.
  • Development of the student’s own jazz compositional style and jazz arrangement techniques for rhythm section and 5 brass/winds, melodic rhythmic paraphrases, tonal effects, shape, solo section, Background writing, Shout chorus, Shooting / variations, ending, tails, codettes and interludes
  • Advanced study of the Jazz repertoire on piano, themes and acronyms, study of the comping of soloists and singers, with walking bass, too.
  • Customization of the student’s study plan, choosing subjects and workshops also from other departments, such as ensembles, orchestras, music production, a second complementary instrument and numerous research activities that stimulate interplay, creativity and the construction of one’s own personal music style.

At the end of the 1st Cycle academic three-year period (Bachelor level), the student will be able to continue his/her further studies in thetwo-year 2nd Cycle Courses (Master level) (acknowledged by the Ministry of Education) inJazz Bass, Pop-rock Bass, Songwriting, Music Production, Applied Music.

INSIGHTS

Jazz professional ensembles represent an innovation introduced in Italy for the first time right at Saint Louis, with renowned teachers who not only direct the ensemble but are part of it as soloists and instrumentalists. They represent an opportunity for extraordinary growth as students can play and confront an established artist, experience the construction of a real repertoire and perform alongside him/her in Italian Clubs and Festivals. They therefore represent a ticket to enter the world of work and an experience in the student’s artistic curriculum.

The student chooses his/her own ensemble teacher, it is also possible to participate in the ensemble with the already formed student’s band, so as to grow together.

Every year 30 different professional ensembles are formed. To name some of them:

  • Jazz 4et, 5et, 6et whit Rosario Giuliani: Bop and hard-bop formations with the most representative Italian soloist.
  • Jazz Quartet with Ramberto Ciammarughi: Groups of experimentation and jazz in-depth approach with the great Maestro Ramberto Ciammarughi.
  • Jazz 8et with Maurizio Giammarco: Jazz, fusion, be-bop and beyond with the extraordinary Maurizio Giammarco, active on the Italian and international scene for over 40 years.
  • Jazz tango with Javier Girotto: Mixed formation of 5-8 elements to discover the original repertoire of Javier Girotto and Astor Piazzolla.
  • Jazz fusion with Umberto Fiorentino: The most contemporary Jazz with an undisputed protagonist of Jazz.
  • Jazz Trio with Fabrizio Sferra: Trio ensemble with the most prolific drummer for Italian Jazz, Fabrizio Sferra.

Mandatory attendance to the minimum extent of the 80% of the lessons.

  • FULL-TIME ATTENDANCE: Classes are mostly held with fortnightly cadence, organized in alternate weeks, with the exception of the instrument / singing lesson which can be organized at the student’s choice on a weekly or fortnightly basis. About 300 hours of classes per year.
  • PART-TIME ATTENDANCE: Students who, for work or distance reasons, are unable to attend all the lessons provided for in the study plan can personalize their own study plan choosing how many subjects to attend from year to year. Part-time attendance implies a probable extension of the course of study beyond 3 years.

Great orchestral formations with the best talented students who perform in theaters and festivals with internationally renowned artists

  • Sax Ensemble with Rosario Giuliani: 5 saxophones and rhythm section for the ensemble directed by Rosario Giuliani. The ensemble will focus on a repertoire dedicated to the genius of Charlie Parker, proposing his solos, extracted from the standards that were permanently part of his live shows, and arranged with 5 voices, along with some original songs by Rosario Giuliani himself.

  • Saint Louis Combo & Big Band conducted by Antonio Solimene: A great orchestral experience that leads musicians to play professionally in important locations and festivals throughout Italy, accompanying internationally renowned artists on stage.

  • Storytellers Diary by Giovanni Candia: Ensemble that provides a synthesis between electronic music and contemporary jazz, through the dialogue between electronic sound and the development of extemporization and improvisation typical of jazz.

  • Latin Louis Combo conducted by Natalio Mangalavite: 16-element ensemble, together to perform the jazz repertoire with South American and Caribbean rhythms.

Personalization of own study path choosing from over 200 different courses from the various departments of St. Louis, a unique opportunity to expand the own skills and build a future as a professional, able to operate in multiple sectors of Music Business.

  • Popular Music Department: Music Management courses, choir writing and arrangement, Black Music, Neo-Soul, Writing and arrangement for pop orchestras, Digital Marketing, Konnakol, Ethnic Music, Creative Writing.
  • Jazz Department: Jazz improvisation courses, jazz harmony studies, jazz arrangement for rhythm section and 5 horns, arrangement for big band.

Since 2012 Saint Louis has participated in the Erasmus + program, which offers the possibility to every student of Academic level to live periods of mobility in other European and Extra-European Higher Education Institutes for study or internship projects.

Each student can therefore benefit of a maximum of 12 months of study or internship abroad for each study cycle (12 months max in the three-year first cycle, 12 months max in the two-year second cycle of academic studies), choosing one’s destination among a wide and excellent offer of foreign partners that Saint Louis has established and consolidated over time.

  1. Consult the Admission Requirements and Study Plan section: Check that your preparation is in line with the skills required for the individual tests by accessing the “Admission requirements and study plan” section.
  2. Realize the video clips for the pre-selection:Record one or more videos containing 5 songs, performed by you in a group (trio the minimum), chosen from the list indicated under Admission within the “Admission Requirements and Study Plan” section. Videos must be uploaded on YouTube or other similar web portals and indicated as links in the application form.
  3. Fill in the application webform and insert the links to the video clips: You can apply to take part in the entrance exam to the 1st and 2nd cycle academic courses from 3rd February to 30th April. International students may apply as of January 1st every year until 30th April. Applications submitted subsequently may be considered only on the basis of the places remaining available.
  4. Wait for pre-selection results:Candidates who pass the pre-selection will be admitted to the admission tests, which will take place in June and September. International candidates can sit the admission tests earlier, from March until June.
  5. Take the admission tests on site:Admission tests are held on at least two consecutive days. International candidates can sit the tests online.
