BASS AND DOUBLE BASS

Andrea Avena double bassist, composer and arranger. In 1986 he won the New Talents competition announced by RAI3 as best new talent (bass el. and double bass); in 1990 he won with the group “Tetracolors” the 1st prize in the competition for new formations in Forlì; he was a finalist in the international competition for composition and arrangement for jazz orchestra in Barga in the ’88, ’89, ’90, ’96 editions; in 1998 he was a finalist in the international composition competition “Scrivere in Jazz” in Sassari.

Winner of the 2009 Opera Imaie Award.

Piovani); “West side story”, “Irma la dolce”; facendo tourneè in tutta Italia, in Grecia, Israele, Spagna, Belgio, Turchia, Tunisia, Francia, Inghilterra, Romania, Cina.

RAIUNO (Roberto Benigni), RAIDUE (Sabina Guzzanti; Luca Zingaretti, “Piazza Grande”, “Mezzogiorno in Famiglia”), TMC (con il trio di Lelio Luttazzi), RAITRE (“Dove Osano Le Quaglie”, “Prima della Prima”, “Che Tempo che Fa”). Radiotre suite: European radio stations’ day dedicated to Ellington (only Italian group), Radiotre: The Quirinal Concerts.

Music for film and theater:

collaborates with Nicola Piovani, Ennio Morricone, Germano Mazzocchetti, Carlo Di Blasi, Lucio Gregoretti, Giovanna Marini, Franco Piersanti, Renato Serio, Piero Pintucci, Stelvio Cipriani, Andrea Guerra.

Andrea Avena is the author of a four-volume method of theory, harmony and music reading (“Theory and Harmony” ediz. Sinfonica), three books devoted to the analysis of melodies and their harmonization (“Analysis and Arrangement”) and an in-depth volume on rhythmic possibilities (“Polymeters, Polyrhythms and Multitemporal Music”).

He teaches harmony, arrangement and double bass in many facilities including Saint Louis College of Music in Rome.

He has recorded about 100 records as a bassist and double bass player, and has two records to his name (big band and small ensembles).
